🇲🇽 “Mexico Has A Second Pandemic: Femicide” - Elle
Femicide is the "intentional murder of women because they are women," according to the World Health Organization. But it can more broadly include "any killings of women or girls”. According to WHO, most femicide crimes are committed by "partners or ex-partners, and involve ongoing abuse in the home, threats or intimidation, sexual violence or situations where women have less power or fewer resources than their partner".
These femicide cases in Mexico have increased by 137% in the last 5 years. In the past four months in 2020 alone, there has been 1,000 killings. These people were aunts, mothers, sisters, and friends of loved ones – and it has been devastating for them. This issue has sparked global manifestations with the hashtag #DayWithoutWomen.
