🌟 Student Spotlight
As you may know, we’re changing things up by inviting new High School Ambassadors or IB graduates to write messages every week, so we can hear more student voices and IB experiences around the world. Today, we’ll hear from Kathlyn, our IB grad!
Hi IBlieve Fam!
It’s Kathlyn, your resident Business Co-Lead. I know it’s a very stressful time for our IB gang so whether you’re studying for exams, writing IAs, touching up your EE, or googling “does this count as CAS” I wish you the best of luck! In stressful times, especially when unmotivated, I find that humour is the best medicine, so here’s an IB horror story that I hope lifts your spirit!
I was an M20 grad in the British Virgin Islands. So I started off my DP journey in September of 2018. We were recovering from the catastrophic hurricanes (Irma then Maria) of 2017. Consequently, my house had no roof, running water, or power. On this particular evening, I was working under flashlight, doing my history homework for the third time, as one does to get their predicted grade in shape. With a blocked brain and full bladder, I decided to pause and go for a bathroom break.
To my dismay, as I went to flush, I found that the hose which brought water into the bathroom had broken, making our toilet un-flushable. You don’t know panic until your history teacher strongly dislikes you, you have writer’s block, and a nonfunctional toilet. So, as the IB student I am, I formulated a plan.
I emptied our bathroom waste bin and grabbed our three largest pots. With my pile of containers in-hand, I went outside, climbed atop our cistern (rain water storage), and filled each one. I then fumbled them individually back to the bathroom. Slowly, I poured the water into the toilet and watched it flush. Relieved, I went back to my room with newfound inspiration and finished that homework. Believe it or not, that small win over the toilet got me a 7 in that assignment- my first of the DP program. That fateful evening, I learned that sometimes you need small victories to motivate you to try for bigger ones.
Looking back to DP year 1 me, now with my IB diploma, running water, and functional roof, I realize that small setbacks, despite their demoralizing nature, are chances for growth. I hope reading this helps you overcome your setbacks, whatever they may be!
Good luck IB-ers! It gets better, I promise!
Kathlyn
